Historically, black women have been more exposed to toxic beauty products than those marketed to white women. According to EWG (Environmental Work Group) data, 75% of typical beauty yet skin care products marketed to black women are considered toxic.
Luckily, more and more women including black women are more conscious of what they put on and into their bodies. This newfound cognizance has created a beauty industry cleaner, making makeup, hair care, and skin care products without harmful chemicals or toxins.

Clean beauty focuses on using ingredients that are 100% safe, sustainable, ethically sourced, and environmentally friendly. Ingredients are usually chemical-free, cruelty-free, and non-toxic: Paraben, formaldehyde, paraffin, SLS, aluminum, hydroquinone, phthalates, triclosan and similar are not included in most clean formulations.
However, there is no particular list of dirty ingredients that defines a beauty, skin, or hair care brand as clean beauty or not.

Along with beauty experts around the world, we are on a mission to raise awareness about harmful ingredients included in cosmetics and personal care products marketed to black women. We also advocate and empower black women to choose safer products for their health and wellness.
I belong to a generation of black women no longer willing to compromise their health for beauty. It's time that we, black women have access to safer choices.
